Covid-19 Update - Your Safety is Our Priority

Don't Miss Tomorrow's King Tide Watch at Manhattan Beach Pier

If you're staying with us at Sea View Inn this weekend, you have a unique opportunity to witness one of nature's most dramatic coastal phenomena right here in Manhattan Beach. Tomorrow morning, Saturday, December 6, the Roundhouse Aquarium is hosting a special King Tide Watch event that promises to be both educational and spectacular.

What Are King Tides?

King tides are the highest tides of the year, occurring when the sun, moon, and Earth align in perfect synchronization. Their combined gravitational forces create visually dramatic high tides that offer a glimpse into what our coastline may look like as sea levels continue to rise. Tomorrow's high tide is predicted to reach 6.88 feet, peaking at 9:17 a.m., significantly higher than the average high tide of 5 to 6 feet.

Event Details

When: Saturday, December 6, 2025
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Where: Base of Manhattan Beach Pier, next to the lifeguard tower and bike path
Address: 2 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266
Cost: FREE
Registration: roundhouseaquarium.org

What to Expect

From the pier, you'll get a direct vantage point to observe this extraordinary natural phenomenon. Local scientists, marine educators, and climate activists will be present to explain the science behind king tides and their significance for coastal communities. This is more than just sightseeing. It's a community science effort that's part of the California Coastal Commission's King Tide Project, providing valuable data
about sea level rise and coastal impacts.

Best Time to Arrive

Plan to arrive by 8:45 a.m. to secure a good viewing spot and meet the Roundhouse Aquarium staff before the tide peaks at 9:17 a.m. The earlier you arrive, the better your vantage point will be for observing the whole progression of the tide.

What to Bring

Essential Items:

  • Camera or smartphone for documentation (photos help scientists track coastal changes)
  • Sunglasses and a sun hat
  • Reusable water bottle or thermos with something warm to drink
  • Warm layers (it will be chilly in the morning, especially with ocean breezes)

Pro Tip: Dress warmer than you think you'll need. Early-morning temperatures along the ocean can be surprisingly cool, even in Southern California.

Parking Information:

Closest Options:

  • Lower Pier Lots: Located at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard. 68 metered spaces with a 5-hour limit at $3.50/hour. These fill up quickly on weekends.
  • Upper Pier Lots: Entrance on Ocean Drive. 50 metered spaces with a 5-hour limit at $3.50/hour.

Alternative Parking:

  • Street parking on nearby residential streets (check posted signs for restrictions)
  • Metlox Underground Structure (Lot 9) at 12th Street and Morningside Drive, though this requires a slightly longer walk to the pier

From Sea View Inn: The Manhattan Beach Pier is just a short drive or a pleasant bike ride away. Consider biking if the weather is nice. There are multiple bike racks near the pier entrance.

Getting Involved

The California Coastal Commission encourages attendees to photograph
the king tides and submit images to help document coastal changes over
time. If you capture photos tomorrow, you can:

  • Upload them at coastal.ca.gov/kingtides
  • Share on social media using #KingTides
  • Email video clips for submission instructions

Your photos become part of a valuable scientific record that helps researchers and policymakers understand how our coastline is changing.

After the King Tide Watch

Once the event wraps up around 10:30 a.m., you'll be perfectly positioned to explore more of what Manhattan Beach has to offer:

Roundhouse Aquarium: Located at the end of the pier in the iconic red-roofed roundhouse building. Admission is free, and you can explore tide pools, touch tanks, and exhibits featuring local marine life, including wolf eels, horn sharks, and other creatures from the waters just beyond the
pier.

Downtown Manhattan Beach: A short walk from the pier, you'll find dozens of restaurants perfect for brunch, coffee shops, boutique shopping, and the vibrant atmosphere that makes Manhattan Beach
special.

Beach Walk: The Strand, Manhattan Beach's famous oceanfront path, stretches for miles in both directions, perfect for a post-event stroll with stunning coastal views.

Why This Matters

King tides aren't just beautiful. They're educational. They show us what regular high tides may look like in the coming decades as climate change impacts sea levels. By attending tomorrow's event, you're not only
witnessing a remarkable natural phenomenon but also contributing to necessary scientific documentation that helps our coastal communities prepare for the future.
